The Rural Outreach Diversion Worker (RODW) program is a free outreach drug and alcohol service. The program aims to widen the safety net, so people at risk of legal and health consequences, due to their substance misuse, are diverted away from the justice system and into treatment. The Rural Outreach Diversion Worker provides a link between the community, police, courts and the drug treatment service system. The RODW can provide assessment, including court based assessments, referrals to other appropriate agencies, case management and treatment where appropriate e.g. in outlying areas with no other support services.

The emphasis of the program is on early intervention to divert individuals, families or groups away from the criminal justice system through assessment, education and treatment.

The program also provides drug assessment and treatment to people who are apprehended for a non-drug related offence and are not eligible to receive a caution and participate in the Drug Diversion program, but whose drug use is a clear factor in their offending behaviour. The RODW attends local courts on a regular basis, in order to help facilitate referrals and client outcomes.

The Outreach Worker can work with people in their own environment, maintaining regular contact and providing support in following through on referrals, including transport, to referral agency and assisting the person to build a range of support structures. The worker will act as case coordinator with the advantage of mobility and flexibility to meet the specific needs of the offenders.

Primarily focus on offenders aged 25 years or younger, however older offenders who are assessed as appropriate for an outreach program.
